The longstanding United Nations has reportedly begun embarking on a series of cutbacks at the body’s HQ in New York. Some of the early cost-cutting measures include the heating being turned down, the diplomats’ bar shuttering early at 5 pm along with diminished first-class global travel budgets. The source of these cuts is that the UN is currently running at a deficit of around £ 180 million per annum. Breitbart has reported that the U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres has forewarned that it may run out of money by the end of October unless world governments and their taxpayers immediately lift financial contributions.
These startling figures will cause many to fear for the UN’s long-term future. Statista states that Britain was among many to pay their dues to the UN late and others had still not paid their dues as of the 8th of October. One of these countries is the USA, who over the last year paid 22% of the overall bill. As he often does Mr Trump took to Twitter to state “So make all Member Countries pay, not just the United States!”.
In Mr Trump’s recent address at the UN, he spoke of the future belonging to patriots and not globalists. The Trump administration has had a frosty relationship with the UN. He has often described the UN as beurocratic and bloated. Mr Trump stated on Twitter: “Moving forward, we are only going to give foreign aid to those who respect us and, frankly, are our friends. And we expect other countries to pay their fair share for the cost of their defence.” This trend of comments from Mr Trump clearly shows an apathetic stance on the UN. The UN is a widely criticised organisation however, it is an organisation that will claim to have prevented worldwide conflict since its birth. However, the future of the UN is likely to entail reform in order for it to continue.
