Momentum turn on the new Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer

This morning the Labour party elected the favourite from the outset Sir Kier Starmer.

The results were as follows:

  • Keir Starmer: 56.2%
  • Rebecca Long Bailey: 27.6% 
  • Lisa Nandy: 16.2%

This continues the Labour party run of a woman never finishing above a man in a leadership contest. However, other alarming figures have emerged from the contest. The website ‘Guido Fawkes’ have intercepted data on the contest that shows: “Less than two-thirds of possible votes were cast in the elections for the #LabourLeadership”.

Mr Starmer used his victory speech to apologise strongly for the anti-Semitism that has occurred in the Labour party, a clear change in tone for Mr Corbyn. However, worryingly for Mr Starmer it has taken less than hour for the left-wing pressure group ‘Momentum’ to turn fire on him. In a strangely worded statement via Twitter, the group said: “In this new era Momentum will play a new role. We’ll hold Keir to account and make sure he keeps his promises, champion big ideas like the Green New Deal, build the power of Labour members and do everything we can to get a Labour government elected. 7/8”. 

However, not everyone has been so negative about the announcement. The LBC presenter Ian Dale took to Twitter to say, “For the Labour Party, a new dawn has broken, has it not?”. Mr Dale was an outspoken critic of Rebecca Long-Bailey and has spoken extensively on his show about the dangers of her becoming Labour leader.
