French President Emmanuel Macron has stepped up his calls for a European Union army, this time saying that it is needed to protect the bloc from China, Russia, and even the United States.
The liberal President who has seen his approval ratings collapse has said we need the EU Army which will seethe reduction in sovereignty for European nations, told Europe 1 Monday night that the bloc needs a “real European army”.
Macron told reporters:
We have to protect ourselves with respect to China, Russia and even the United States of America. When I see President Trump announcing that he’s quitting a major disarmament treaty which was formed after the 1980s euro-missile crisis that hit Europe, who is the main victim? Europe and its security.
We will not protect the Europeans unless we decide to have a true European army.
Faced with Russia, which is on our borders and has shown that it can be threatening, we must have a Europe that defends itself more alone without depending only on the United States.
Nigel Farage has gone on the attack against this by saying the real European plan is coming to fruition:
A true European army says Emmanuel Macron, backing up comments from Commission President Jean-Claude Juncker, who said not too long ago, deference to NATO can no longer be used as a convenient alibi to argue against greater European efforts.
Folks, they’re building a European army, they’re not messing about. Isn’t it funny some Remoaners complained Boris put some numbers on a side of a bus and somehow, that was a terrible lie.
Do you know something, they’ve been lying to us for 50 years about the true intentions of the European Union. These people really worry me. I think a European army is very very dangerous. What an insult, and what a worry this is for those that believe in co-operation with America and others in NATO.”
Earlier today Mr Macron said Europe needed to build a real army to become less reliant on the United States, in the face of a resurgent Russia. Macron has a home approval rating of 21% with many French people tired of his open border, globalist rhetoric.
In August, Macron called for defence divergence from the United States, then including current French foe Russia as those the centrist premier counted as possible European defence partners.

There was anger recently when British Troops took part in exercises with the EU flag on their uniforms but they were swiftly removed after a public outcry.
Last year, the European leader led the charge for a United States of Europe with a full monetary union and a single army, the EU making the first major step towards the latter in November after 23 member states signed the European Defence Union’s Permanent Structured Cooperation process (PESCO).
