Controversial civil servant Olly Robbins’ exit was announced during a Tory leadership hustings and the The audience erupted with cheers. Mr Hunt sensed the mood and struck a more pro-Brexit tone by saying: “I wasn’t a believer in the backstop, I didn’t believe it would get through Parliament. It’s a good move to change our approach.”
The 44-year-old former politician turned Government official was widely seen as the architect behind Theresa May’s botched Brexit negotiations and a key figure in attempting to secure continued links with the EU.
Mr Robbins came under significant scrutiny after it was revealed in the BBC’s ‘Brexit: Behind Closed Doors’ that the Remainer begged for Belgian citizenship for after Britain leaves the bloc.
Conservative MP for Wellingborough Peter Bone made the civil servant extremely uncomfortable during a committee grilling when he has asked:
“Has The Secretary of State had an opportunity to watch ‘Brexit: Behind Closed Doors’. It is hidden away by the BBC on BBC4.
But, it is quite a revealing programme sir, because in it, the lead negotiator for our exit from the European Union, Olly Robbins, who I think is in Brussels this week, says because he has done such rotten deal, he can’t come back to the United Kingdom and is applying for Belgian citizenship.
Is that appropriate Secretary of State?”
Robbins looked extremely agitated and advised he had only seen clips of the documentary but not in full. Many commentators say that with a Boris Johnson premiership likely Robbins jumped before he was pushed as he would have been one of the first targets for elimination. It will be interesting to see what highly paid establishment role Mr Robbins takes on next.
