Opinion-The Swamp is starting to be DRAINED!

The first winter general election campaign hasn’t even officially started yet and many are suggesting that democracy is already coming up trumps. This Parliament has received widespread criticism on a range of issues. However, one of the most common issues has been a sustained a group of anti-Brexit MPs who stood on a manifesto promising to respect the result of the referendum but have done the exact opposite. An epitome of this is Anna Soubry. She was re-elected in 2017 as a Conservative MP for Broxtowe, a pro-Brexit seat, on a manifesto to uphold the referendum result. Ms Soubry has continually sought to blocking Brexit and has defected to form a new party without submitting herself to the indignity of a by-election.

However, Ms Soubry is not the only member of this zombie parliament to enrage the electorate. It will not come as a surprise this morning when the public discover the sheer number of MP’s not standing for re-election. Other anti-Brexit Tory defectors aren’t even bothering to submit themselves to the verdict of the British electorate. One such example is Heidi Allen, who left the Tories to join TIG and then, a few weeks ago made a further defection on to the Lib Dems. Ms Allen has taken to Twitter to cite her reasons “I am exhausted by the invasion into my privacy and the nastiness and intimidation that has become commonplace. Nobody in any job should have to put up with threats, aggressive emails, being shouted at in the street.”

Many may see this as a subversion of the fact she faced little chance of re-election. Former cabinet minister Amber Rudd and recent leadership candidate Rory Stewart have also announced they wont seek re-election. It is difficult to see these decisions in any other context other than the widespread recent misjudgement of the political elite. The swamp wasn’t due to be drained for another 6 weeks.

This election campaign is likely to be the most unpredictable in recent memory, as well as being the most important in living memory. Those who were lacking enthusiasm to traipse to the polls in the middle of winter, may get the opportunity to cast their vote on a fresh set of exciting forward-thinking new parliamentarians. My goodness this election was needed!
