Analysis- Where things went WRONG for Brexit at the Peterborough by-election

The by-election in Peterborough has brought the momentum of The Brexit Party juggernaut to a halt with Labour managing to hold on to win the seat.

Union activist Lisa Forbes retained the constituency for Labour, taking 31% of the vote and beating the Brexit Party’s Mike Greene (29%) by 683 votes on a turnout of 48% which is significantly higher than usual for by-elections.
Forbes had been accused of anti-semitism but it does not appear to have damaged her campaign as she hailed her “significant” victory and said it showed people had “rejected the politics of division”.
Nigel Farage said “something very significant” had happened but it was noticeable that he entered in through a side door and avoided the media limelight. The Conservatives came third with 21%, while the Liberal Democrats were fourth with 12%, followed by the Green Party on 3%.
UKIP won a pathetic and paltry 400 votes and the SDP with Patrick O’Flynn also stood gaining nearly 200 votes. If these parties didn’t stand and The Brexit Party had managed around 100 extra votes from others they would have won. Serious questions have to be asked about what both parties hoped to achieve by standing and losing their deposits and letting Labour win.
Meanwhile leave.eu founder and Farage ally Arron Banks has just tweeted: “The muslim bloc vote matters more …” in relation to the question about Labour electing a member who had espoused anti-semitic views.
Mr Farage has maintained that he will continue his strategy of splitting the Tory vote by showing them that if they do not deliver Brexit a Corbyn Government will be the result, a very high stakes game.
