Significant outrage has emerged in Scotland today as it has been confirmed that the police can access personal details from Scotland’s Test and Protect scheme to issue fines. This came after considerable assurances were given by Nicola Sturgeon that any data would only be used to trace contacts.
When Scotland’s First Minister Nicola Sturgeon launched ‘Test and Protect’ on the 26th of May she told the people of Scotland “that your privacy will be respected at all times”. However, UNN’s Oliver Down has now ascertained that that data involved with this app can indeed be shared with Police Scotland in order to issue fines for non-compliance of Covid-19 restrictions. In addition to this, the data can be shared with any other organisations that can demonstrate a “legitimate reason” to access the data.
Stephen Reicher who is a professor of social psychology at the University of St Andrews, as well as being on Nicola Sturgeon’s Covid-19 advisory group has reacted angrily to this news. He has said via Twitter: “This is deeply worrying in terms of civil liberties, it is also the perfect way to stop people getting tested and providing their contacts. If you want adherence, trust us, support us, don’t criminalise us!”.
This news has caused considerable concern among many. The Twitter user @PaulCMcGeady tweeted “I’ve deleted the app from my phone over fears my data is being shared with another party.”
A second Twitter user, @Robster12827605 reacted to this news by Tweeting “Hence why I will never download the App. Does anyone actually believe the SNP will not use your data to their advantage. Remember Sturgeon is a LIAR !!!!!!”
