The President of the US Donald Trump has been nominated for a 2021 Nobel Peace Prize. President Trump has been nominated for his work in agreeing the historic peace agreement between Israel and the United Arab Emirates. Christian Tybring-Gjedde, who is a member of the Norwegian Parliament is understood to be the nominator.
Should he win, then the President would emulate Barack Obama, who won the award in 2009 for what was described at the time as his “extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between people”. This award was criticised by some at the time who felt it was undeserved and politically motivated.
The UAE and Israel deal that was brokered by President Trump is expected to be officially ratified at a ceremony next Tuesday. Mr Tybring-Gjedde has told Fox News: “For his merit, I think he has done more trying to create peace between nations than most other Peace Prize nominees. I’m not a big Trump supporter. The committee should look at the facts and judge him on the facts – not on the way he behaves sometimes. The people who have received the Peace Prize in recent years have done much less than Donald Trump. For example, Barack Obama did nothing”.
The prominent Twitter account @MoggMentum has reacted with glee at this news, with the account tweeting” Donald Trump has been nominated for a Nobel Peace Prize. Triggered lefties in.. 1…2….3”. The political YouTuber Mayhar Tousi tweeted from his account “ Oh I cannot wait for the left to have a meltdown over this”.
