In a speech given today Prime Minister Boris Johnson has stated that “really very few” Islamists can be successfully rehabilitated. In addition to this Mr Johnson stated it time to emphasise “the custodial option” in a move to strengthen prison sentences for those found guilty.  Mr Johnson was speaking after Sudesh Amman stabbed multiple people in Streatham, London as part of his Jihadi killing spree. This was just days after he received automatic early release only 13 months into a  sentence for terror offences.

Mr Amman was the second Islamic terrorist who struck while out on automatic early release after the London Bridge killer Usman Khan was also been a freed terror convict. Mr Johnson said “I’m going to level with you,” this was in response to a journalist who asked him if the public could be sure that Mr Johnson stated that those convicted of terrorist offences were coming out of prison less dangerous than when they went in. Mr Johnson continued “I think, looking at the problems we have with re-educating and reclaiming and rehabilitating people who succumb to Islamism, it’s very, very hard, and very tough, and it can happen, but the instances of success are really very few,” he confessed. [W]e need to be frank about that, and we need to think about how we handle that in our criminal justice system.”

Mr Johnson went on to say that “Deradicalising people is a very, very difficult thing to do… [there is] a big psychological barrier people find it hard to get back over — and that’s why I stress the importance of the custodial option.” The Prime Minister wants to end automatic early release for  terrorists and as well as sexual offenders. Mr Johnson said his administration is going “to take action to ensure that people, irrespective of the law that we’re bringing in, [to ensure that] people in the current stream do not qualify automatically for early release”. This is a welcome move to many, but will it be allowed under the British constitution and the Human Rights Act.
