Reports are emerging that Prince Harry is set to back a move to ban ‘Swing Low, Sweet Chariot’ because of its lyrical links with slavery. UNN, last week brought you the news that a review was set to be launched into the song. Numerous Sunday publications yesterday printed that the Prince, now residing overseas, fully supports the Rugby Football Union’s (RFU) review into the song.
Many of the Mainstream media publications that printed this story, have failed to state that since 2013 Prince Harry has indeed been a Patron of the RFU, so his views on this matter could indeed be very important. In addition to this as stated on the Royal’ website, the Prince spent part of his gap year in 2004 training as an “Assistant Development Officer with the Rugby Football Union”.
A blanket ban on the song would likely be extremely difficult to enforce so it is expected that the RFU could discourage fans from singing the anthem at Twickenham. A further complication is that the song lyrics are an integral part of the RFU marketing strategy, with many advertisements, including at Twickenham itself saying ‘Carry Them Home’.
Yesterday the Sun reported that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have been in contact with Black Lives Matter leaders to discuss getting involved with activities.
