The jobs would go, they said, there would be an emergency budget they said. ‘Despite Brexit’ the British economy has once again refused to conform to the project fear prophecies of the Remainer economists, celebrities and ‘experts’ and has posted record job numbers less than two weeks before Britain’s withdrawal from the European Union next Friday.
In the three-month period before December’s general election which Boris Johnson secured a stonking mandate to leave the EU, 208,000 people gained employment in Britain. This represents the highest level of job growth in the best part of a year. The employment rate rose by 0.6 per cent since the beginning of 2019. This took the employment rate in the UK to a record high of 76.3 per cent. The number of people in employment in the UK reached a record of 32.9 million.
The jobs report released by the Office for National Statistics (ONS) makes for terrific reading for the government. When Mims Davies the minister for employment was asked for comment she said: “This, coupled with business confidence turning a corner, is paving the way for an even stronger jobs market in 2020,” These figures are likely to strengthen Boris Johnson’s position in negotiations with Brussels, and will likely take the EU chiefs by surprise.
The rise in employment was driven predominantly by women, who reached a record employment rate of 72.3 per cent, an increase of 1.1 per cent on the previous year. This higher level of female employment could be attributed to the increase in pension age from 60 to 65 which invariably has left more women in the workforce. David Freeman of ONS said “The employment rate is at a new record high, with over two-thirds of the growth in people in work in the last year coming from women working full-time”. Maybe Brexit won’t be a disaster after all.
