School accused of scaremongering its students with anti-Brexit letter

A school in Dorset has come under fire with accusations of scaremongering its students ahead of the possibility of a so-called no-deal Brexit. Jackie Shanks who is the head of Mountjoy School in West Dorset, sent a letter to parents saying the school had purchased an additional freezer in case of food shortages and that the school will also increase stocks of canned food and long shelf life products to counteract these shortages.

The headteacher has been quick to respond. Ms Shanks has stated that she was merely being “responsible” and not scaremongering. The letter, that was sent out on Wednesday provoked a backlash from all over the United Kingdom and has been all over social media. One section of the letter read, “ Risks that are pertinent to our operation at Mountjoy school include food shortages, medicine shortages and fuel shortages, along with increases in safeguarding referrals, with particular reference to modern slavery, Domestic Abuse, Hate Crime, and a rise in Extremist Activity alongside Civil Unrest.” This letter has been taken in the context of over the top rhetoric being alleged of the Prime Minister in Parliament.

The school has stated that they are simply responding to moves by Dorset Council. Ms Shanks told Bridport News “Dorset council sent through a risk register for the event of a no-deal Brexit. It was sent to headteachers but is currently available on its website”. Dorset is an area of the UK where 56% of its constituency voted to leave the European Union over 3 years ago.  UNN has contacted the school for a statement and was passed on to Dorset Council communications department. This department told UNN’s current affairs correspondent Oliver Down that they would send over a pre-prepared statement immediately. However, over 3 hours later this has yet to be forthcoming. Should any news be forthcoming, UNN will be sure to update.
