Startling comments have emerged from avid Brexiteer Rod Liddle when he claimed that Britain’s likely Prime Minister as soon as Wednesday does not truly believe in Brexit and does not actually see Brexit as a “crucial issue”.
Mr Liddle was speaking on LBC when he stated that he feels that Mr Johnson making noises of no-deal without ever having any intention of doing it in a manner similar to his predecessor Theresa May. Whilst Mr Liddle’s comments may be rubbished by many supporting Mr Johnson, Tim Shipman’s book ‘all-out war’ contains an unpublished article by Boris Johnson advocating Britain remaining in the European Union.
Rod Liddle has been very clear to put Boris Johnson in a different camp to other lifelong Brexiteers. Mr Liddle stated “It took him an awfully long time to decide what side… but then he did decide. But I’m not sure he decided because he was, in the way that David Davis and Jacob Rees-Mogg are, clearly committed to the idea of Britain leaving and leaving with no deal if necessary.” However, Jacob Rees-Mogg was one of the first Conservative MP’s to publicly back Boris Johnson, which could suggest that he has reason to believe that Mr Johnson will deliver a satisfactory Brexit for the chairman of the European research group.
Whilst it should be remembered that Rod Liddle has not been one to shy away from controversial comments, Mr Liddle was firm when suggesting that he sees similarities between Boris Johnson and Theresa May.
He stated that “Boris isn’t doing much different; he’s saying we must say there’s no deal, we can’t go into a negotiation without saying no deal. If you’re telling them that it’s just a negotiating tool then it’s a paper tiger again. But also he’s said that there’s a one-in-a-million chance of no deal. So, they know that no deal is a paper tiger – it has no force for them.”
Given that Boris Johnson’s critics see him as somewhat of a ‘u-turn merchant’ the fact Boris Johnson claimed Britain would leave on the October the 31st “do or die” followed by the quotes above only a day later may give credence to Mr Liddle’s claims.
