Images of a highly threatening banner with hanging effigies have been draped over Salford bridge ahead of the Conservative party conference that begins today, and this isn’t the first time. The sign, which read ‘130,000 killed under tory rule time to level the playing field’. It is understood that the sign, which calls for the ‘playing field to be levelled’ in response to ‘130,000 deaths’ under the Conservatives, is a reference to Conservative party austerity. Despite this banner being removed by Salford council a picture tweeted out by Momentum, the pro-Jeremy Corbyn wing of the Labour party, with the message “Welcome to Manchester”.
The banner caused significant outrage and was immediately spread far and wide over social media. A banner reading ‘hang the Tories’ appeared in 2017 before Conservative party conference and an equally toned banner also appeared before today’s opening of the annual conference. Some suggested that this banner equates to a death or terror threat and given events in the commons this week, this banner is highly likely to increase tensions further. It is also thought members of Antifa, the controversial hard-left organisation, are looking to protest in Manchester as well.
“Good morning @Conservatives. Welcome to Manchester,” the tweet read in a manner that would be more in keeping with football hooligans than a wing of the British Labour party. The tweet has been subsequently deleted. Kirsty Boyd tweeted saying, “Never have I felt more apprehensive than seeing this in my morning run pre #CPC19. Does this classify as death/terrorist threat? Utterly vile.”
Upon the creation of this article, not one MSM source has covered this story. The Manchester evening news is the only outlet to have ran this story currently. Many across the UK will feel extremely uncomfortable with members of any political party coming under direct threat whilst congregating at an annual event. Many will also be somewhat perplexed as to the MSM blackout on issues such as public threats of violence.
