Listening to coverage of the current crisis in Ukraine or watching any clips on TV and you could be forgiven for thinking that the Russians had invaded the United Kingdom. The mainstream media are loving it. I suppose it is a break from reporting fake deaths from Covid-19 to reporting some real deaths from bombs and bullets. As Unity News Network’s Lead Correspondent David Clews rightly said on the UNN Telegram site, people are just “masturbating (not David’s exact word) over war porn”. I must say that the hairs stood up on the back of my neck when I heard the air raid siren going off over Kiev on the first day of hostilities. You must have experienced this to know what it is like, and I have. The fear in the hearts of the ordinary Ukrainian citizens is unimaginable.
Vladimir Putin is obviously a bad ‘un and I cannot share Donald Trump’s assessment of him as a genius. But the portrayal of the Ukrainians (the politicians not the people) as a group who have nothing but right on their side is implausible. When disreputable people like Nicola Sturgeon start to issue dire warnings to Russia (what with? She’s got neither weaponry nor financial clout and is fast running out of credibility) my natural tendency to see these war zones in simple binary terms is kept in check. Sunday Mail correspondent Peter Hitchens who, unlike Nicola, knows Ukraine very well points to the fact that there are some very unsavoury fascist elements within Ukraine who will stir things up, exploit the situation and arm 85 year old grandmothers.
I have absolutely no idea what motivates a man like Vladimir Putin. He does not look at the world like other leaders. Possibly, and there appears to be some veracity to the claim that he is a Christian, he may have a spiritual mission to reunite the divided Eastern Orthodox Church. His vision may be less spiritual and he may simply wish, like Peter the Great to whom he has been compared, to turn the clock back and create a greater Russia again, if not to go the whole way and recreate the USSR. It is not entirely clear what does go on in his mind, he is certainly a complex character with a strong and vicarious sense of victimhood. But he has given hints of what he wants to achieve in lengthy speeches while our woke elites simply focused on the wrong issues and have allowed him to seize this opportunity. He is clearly not to be trusted as, albeit with some geopolitical sophistry, he has done precisely what he said he would not do and invaded Ukraine.
This is a war in which we should not be involved at any level. But any pretence that we are not in it up to our virtue-signalling, sabre rattling necks is a joke. We are openly sending military aid including lethal weapons to Ukraine. That is lethal as in they have the capability to kill people. It must be a comfort to many that we will not be sending in British troops…yet. But if I hand someone a gun in the knowledge that they are going to use it to kill someone, that makes me an accessory and I could also be charged with murder. I am sure that the Russian troops will be comforted to know that they will not be facing and being killed by British soldiers (‘they/them’) but only by Ukrainians with weapons we have supplied. I leave you with this thought. Russian missiles in nine locations could reach—and inflict terrible damage on—the United Kingdom within twenty minutes.
