A 25-year-old man has today appeared in Armagh Magistrates’ Court charged with rape and causing grievous bodily harm earlier on this week as case details are coming out.
The newborn was reportedly rushed to hospital from the Annalong area of County Down, Northern Ireland.
Detectives from the Serious Crime Branch are currently investigating the case.
The accused whose name is not being released was remanded in custody at Newry Magistrates’ Court next Wednesday, following his brief appearance on Saturday, September 29.
At this stage, no bail application was made by the defendant’s lawyer.
A Police Service of Northern Ireland spokesman told MailOnline: “Detectives from PSNI Serious Crime Branch investigating an incident in which an infant from the Annalong area sustained a number of serious injuries, charged a 25 year old man with rape and grievous bodily harm with intent.”
