PERVERTED care home worker RAPED defenceless old woman!

A laundryman who raped a dementia sufferer in her bed at a care home was caught when he left the used condom behind in her bed. Himwanth Ramkishun, 54,

Ramkishun denied what happened and attempted to cover his tracks but was convicted in less than an hour after a four-day trial at Plymouth crown court. The judge branded him evil and handed the 54-year-old a 16-year prison sentence.

Camelot Care said that it had installed CCTV cameras outside the 36-bed home and in corridors. It added that it had no reason to suspect the behaviour of Ramkishun in the decade he was doing the laundry there. The woman died about six months after the rape, the court heard. He was only caught when he left behind a condom in the elderly woman’s bed at Freshfields nursing home in Plymouth,

Ramkishun, originally from Guyana in the West Indies, had no previous convictions. He said that he came to Britain to follow his wife, a trained nurse. He found a job first as a cleaner and then as laundryman at the home in Agaton Road, where she also worked. Mrs Ramkishun still works at the home and she left the court building in tears, to be comforted by colleagues. Recorder Tait said that Ramkishun used his knowledge of the routines at the home to find a ‘window of opportunity’ to rape the woman in her room.

The judge told the court he must have been disturbed though because he left behind a condom. It was found by carers changing her incontinence pads on Saturday, June 10 last year. In a shocking turn of events his wife Ivorine was duty manager and was called to remove the condom.

Without any knowledge of what had happened, she took the condom to her office as she called the police. Ramkishun told police that he accidentally placed his hand on the condom. He later embellished his story to say that he had shaken the item to try and explain how some of his skin cells could have fallen inside. He cruelly called his wife to give evidence on his behalf and then tried to claim he did not know at the time where the condom came from – saying he thought it was a joke.

Camelot care, who ran the home, said:

Following the serious incident last year, the police and safeguarding were immediately informed. Meetings with these bodies were held to ensure the continuing safety of the residents. After being accused the employee was immediately suspended and the home fully cooperated with the police throughout their investigation.

Prior to the event, the employee had given the management of the home no reason for concern in the ten years he had worked in the laundry. To improve security, the home had installed CCTV cameras to cover external areas and also internal corridors.

The home continues as required by the Care Quality Commission to ensure robust recruitment procedures are always followed.”

A police spokesperson said: “This has been a lengthy and protracted investigation, made more challenging by the denial of the suspect throughout. Sadly the victim passed away prior to the case being brought before the court but it was nonetheless important to seek justice on her behalf.”
