UK flag at EU headquarters to be put in a MUSEUM after Brexit!

Reports are emerging that on what is being dubbed as ‘Brexit day’ (January 31^st) the British flag that currently flies outside the European Union will be lowered and will be placed in a display permanently at the museum of the EU which is in Brussels. The Telegraph have stated that that this is on the order of David Sassoli who is the current European parliament president. Some on social media have mocked this and have likened it to the days of mourning that happen in individual states when flags often fly at half-mast.

The Guardian are reporting that this will be a low-key affair following requests from Brexit party MEP’s request of a ceremony, the flags will now be removed at an unconfirmed time. The flag will be held in the House of History museum that is funded by the EU. At the end of each legislature MEP’s are given a medal for there service. Britain’s 73 MEP’s are not expected to receive the award.

In customary EU style, parliament officials rubber-stamped the decision not to hold a flag removal ceremony at a meeting on Thursday without discussion. The departure of the British MEPs will see the parliament reduced to 705 MEPs from 751 seats, with 27 British seats redistributed to 14 other countries that are deemed to be currently under-represented in Brussels and Strasbourg. Flags have been a topical subject in Brussels this week. On Monday evening Nigel Farage took to Twitter and said: “We have just had our Union Jack flags removed from our desks in the European Parliament, by order of the President. National symbols are now banned. Thank god we are leaving”. Whilst the 31^st of January is not the end of the road, it does mark the moment where Brexit becomes inevitable, which it has far from been for the last 3.5 years.
