United Kingdom’s national terrorism threat level moved to ‘SEVERE’ after attacks in Austria and France

The United Kingdom’s national terrorism threat level has been raised to “severe” following the terror attacks by Islamic militants in France and Austria.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said the upgrading of the threat level from “substantial” was a “precautionary measure” after the “horrific” terror attacks in Vienna, Paris and Nice which have left eight people dead.

The decision by the Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre (JTAC) to raise the level to severe means a terror attack is now “highly likely” rather than “likely.”

The Home Office today Tweeted in the last hour: “The independent Joint Terrorism Analysis Centre has changed the UK national terrorism threat level to SEVERE.

“This means that a terrorist attack is highly likely.

“People should be alert but not alarmed & report concerns to the police.

The threat level of severe is one below the highest level of “critical”, the move means security chiefs believe that an attack is highly likely but there is no specific intelligence of an imminent attack being planned.

Last week, three others died in a knife attack in Nice, France, and a teacher was murdered in Paris last month.

Home Secretary Priti Patel said the British people should be “alert but not alarmed”.

“This is a precautionary measure following the horrific events of the last week in France and last night in Austria and is not based on a specific threat.”

She continued: “As I’ve said before, we face a real and serious threat in the UK from terrorism.

“I would ask the public to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activity to the police.”
