A widow whose toyboy husband was murdered after she spent her £90,000 life savings to be with him has returned home to East Lothian destitute. She sold her house and used the proceeds to build a house for her and 26-year-old Priyanjana De Zoysa.
However, dreams of an idyllic retirement in the sun came to a halt when Priyanjana was shot dead by gangsters last year. Diane was left stranded, claiming her dead husband’s family refused to let her sell the house she funded.
Diane was on holiday in Sri Lanka with a friend six years ago where she had a whirlwind romance and married him just seven months later.
She moved to Sri Lanka permanently in 2016, paying £57,000 for the house to be built close to her husband’s family and £31,000 for a brand new minibus he could use to become a chauffeur driver.
Priyanjana was shot three times on May 30 last year after local gangsters found out he had married a rich foreigner.
Diane used to work for the local council and also discovered that he had a second wife. She also says she has run up thousands of pounds in debt trying to support Priyanjana’s family after he was shot and buying basic provisions.
She said she managed to flee her in-laws earlier this month and stayed with pals before leaving Sri Lanka.
Diane is staying with a relative and said:
I just couldn’t stay there any longer. I kind of feel stupid now that I didn’t listen to my family and my friends because they said it was just about the money.
I thought he did really love me but obviously he didn’t.
My husband’s family virtually had me under house arrest for two years. I couldn’t go anywhere – not even to the beach.
They weren’t happy I was leaving and put a complaint in to the local police because I was leaving with all my property but I managed to get away to stay with friends. They weren’t happy because they wouldn’t get any more money from me.
I have nothing and still owe my credit card £4000. I’m still trying to pay that off. It’s just impossible. I will have to try to find work. I can’t live on my pension here – it’s not enough.
But I’m just glad to be home.”
