Gary Lineker is now backing the campaign for a second Brexit referendum, saying: “Some things in life are more important than football.”
The ex-footballer has united with the People’s Vote group as they are set to launch a series of rallies and protests across the UK calling for a referendum on the final Brexit deal.
Lineker, who spouts off about the UK’s departure from the EU on Twitter since the Leave vote in 2016, said:
I spent most of the last few weeks totally focused on a fantastic World Cup. But it was impossible to avoid what was happening in the Brexit debate back home. Now I’m back I find the whole thing more bewildering and worrying than ever.
Whether you voted Leave or Remain, did anyone really vote for the mess we seem to be in, let alone the prospect of no deal with all the terrible consequences attached to that? Brexit feels like it is going very wrong indeed.
The politicians seem unable to resolve the problem the people gave them in voting to Leave. That is why I think there should be a People’s Vote on the final deal, and why I am sending best wishes and good luck to the campaigners who will be stepping up the pressure over the summer.”
Lineker is the highest paid BBC presenter and earns £1.75 million per year. However a BBC source has said that in position as a freelance broadcaster, and a presenter who does not front news or politics programmes, means that he does not have to abide by their rules on impartiality.
The People’s Vote campaign is set hold rallies in cities including Bristol, Edinburgh, Newcastle, Cambridge, Cardiff, Liverpool and Birmingham over the next three months.
This comes as grassroots organisation UK Unity has started an Event on Facebook and plans to hold a protest in London outside the British parliament. The event is set to take place on the 5 September at 11:00–14:00 and start outside Downing Street.
The event on Facebook has seen growing interest of thousands, the description of the event is as follows:
“The people have had enough and UK unity says we cannot sit back and allow this Brexit betrayal so we must take ACTION! This will be the first Prime Ministers Questions back after the summer recess. Doing it at this time means we should also get media coverage like our previous rallies.
We need as many people on the streets to tell May we will not accept her soft Brexit!
We will symbolically block the gates of Number 10 before she leaves to go to PMQ’s then we will make our way to Parliament to protest while all the traitor MP’s are listening! Please share this event far and wide. UK unity will provide banners and placards and people are also encouraged to bring their own as well as flags.
Unity currently has over 20,000 signed up supporters and a membership base that is always seeking to expand. The founder of UK Unity David Clews has shown his discontent with Theresa May and the British cabinet over the way they have been handling the Brexit negotiations among other things.

UK Unity was formed nine months ago and since has had various action days all around the country, however, this protest is the first of its kind using fruitful language like they will ‘symbolically block the gates of Number 10′
Unity News Network will be reporting Live on the day and will bring you all the latest news!
