This Wednesday sees the budget day and it is predicted by Laura Kussenberg to be a “whopper”. Stephen Barclay, the Chief Secretary to the Treasury says it is going to kick-start Britain. The Prime Minister stood on the step of Downing Street and addressed the nation just after his election victory and promised to level up right across the UK, so that no matter where you live you can succeed.
During the election campaign Boris Johnson promised to invest in the NHS, he promised to 20,000 new police officers and he promised 40 new hospitals. The Budget on Wednesday is the Conservative party’s opportunity to deliver on those promises. Stephen Barclay has said of the Budget: “we will ensure that someone in Teesside has the same opportunities to unlock their talents as someone in Twickenham. We are already taking action to level up the country, kickstarting a transport and infrastructure revolution”.
Mr Barclay has said that a £5 billion package to transform buses and cycling provision across the country will be in the Budget as well as committing to the controversial HS2 project. Mr Barclay defends the HS2 project and says the links to the North are crucial as : “areas like the North East, Yorkshire and the South West are growing more slowly than the rest of the country and are not fulfilling their potential”. In addition to this, the Chancellor Rishi Sunak is expected to axe the ‘Tampon Tax’, he will be able to do this as a result of being free from EU regulations.
This week’s budget is the opportunity for the government to walk the walk on all of the promises they have made for the last three months, will they take that opportunity? We will find out on Wednesday.
