Over the weekend the Gilet’s Jaunes/ Yellow Vests once again took to the streets en masse to protest against the continuing mis-rule of President Emmanuel Macron. Increasingly the protests are taking a far more anti- EU turn and by and large remain entirely peaceful.
Many people have commented that this is not the impression received by the Mainstream Media in the UK with many highlighting the fact that with such revolutionary actions taking place just 40 miles across the sea it is not headline news every night.
One social media user highlighted the fact that during the Ukraine Revolution Huw Edwards of the BBC and others actually went over there and led the news every night with coverage but there appears to be less on what is happening in France.
It was estimated 84,000 protestors took to the streets, up from 66,000 the previous week, whilst the French state mobilised 80,000 security officers in response.
Macron’s big idea is a ‘debate’ on ‘national renewal’ in France but many protestors have responded that they will not stop until Macron is removed.
The debate will focus on four themes – taxes, green energy, institutional reform, and citizenship. He has already unveiled a 10-billion-euro financial relief package for low earners and axed the planned fuel tax hike.
Macron told reporters: “This debate is a great opportunity for the country… I want a real debate. It is not a debate whose terms and outcome are known. It is a debate to which I wish that we all commit ourselves.”
