President of Russia Vladimir Putin believes that the dominant western ideology of liberalism since the end of World War II has “become obsolete.” This comes at the start of the G20 meeting in Osaka, Japan.
During a wide ranging interview published today in the Financial Times President Putin said liberalism has now come “into conflict” with what people around the world want.
Putin said: “liberals cannot simply dictate anything to anyone just like they have been attempting to do over the recent decades.”
He also slammed German Chancellor Angela Merkel’s decision to admit more than 1 million refugees to Germany in 2015, mainly from war ravaged syria Syria, as a “cardinal mistake.”
President Putin also lavished praise on President Trump saying that he was putting America first and helping the economy by stemming the flow of migrants and
“The liberal idea presupposes that nothing needs to be done. That migrants can kill, plunder and rape with impunity because their rights as migrants have to be protected.
Every crime must have its punishment. The liberal idea has become obsolete. It has come into conflict with the interests of the overwhelming majority of the population.”
President of the European Council Donald Tusk told reporters he “strongly” disagreed with the Russian president.
Tusk said:
“Whoever claims that liberal democracy is obsolete also claims that freedoms are obsolete, that the rule of law is obsolete and that human rights are obsolete.”
